Globo onion: description, planting seedlings, care, feeding

Globo onion is a Czech large-fruited variety with a mild taste. It is characterized by high productivity. Root crops ripen only by September (late ripening). Almost all bulbs are large, with a regular round shape. Can be grown both for yourself and for sale.

Origin story

Onion Globo was bred in the Czech Republic by the employees of the company "Semo" (founded in 1994). The variety quickly spread in different European countries, came to Russia. It is not included in the register of breeding achievements of the Russian Federation, although it is known to many summer residents.

Description and characteristics of the Globo onion

Globo onion belongs to large-fruited varieties - the bulbs are massive, attractive in appearance and very tasty. Due to its high yield, the crop can be cultivated both for personal consumption and for sale.

Appearance

Globo bulbs with a classic round shape. The husk is golden brown. The sizes are large, weighing an average of 400-500 g, often reaching 700-900 g. Some bulbs can be slightly elongated, elliptical in shape.

Ripening period and yield

Globo onion belongs to late-ripening varieties. It ripens within 120–160 days after germination. The timing depends on the climatic conditions of the region and agricultural technology. When planted in spring, harvest can be taken in September. To accelerate ripening, the seedling growing method is used. The crop yield is very high - the figure reaches 12-14 kg from 1 m2, i.e. 120-140 kg per one hundred square meters.

Disease and pest resistance

Globo onions have excellent resistance to diseases and pests - this provides high yields. However, the risk of injury cannot be completely ruled out. For example, with improper care, as well as in cold and rainy summers, the crop can suffer from peronosporosis (downy mildew). The invasion of onion flies and other pests is not excluded. Therefore, it is necessary to inspect the planting periodically. At the first signs of the disease, they are treated with folk remedies or special preparations.

Globo onion gives very large root crops weighing up to 700 g

Composition and properties

The inner layers are light in color, white on the cut. The onion is juicy, the taste is sweetish, mild, and is rated by many summer residents as excellent. The onion contains vitamins, sugars, trace elements and other valuable components:

  • vitamins of group B, C, E, PP;
  • saponins;
  • glycosides;
  • phytoncides;
  • essential oils;
  • pectins;
  • organic acids;
  • macro- and microelements (potassium, sulfur, iron, phosphorus, iodine and others).

Application

Globo onion has a mild taste, so it is especially good fresh. Used for preparing salads, all kinds of dishes. Suitable for homemade products - pickles, pickled dishes.

Growing regions

Onions normally adapt to different climatic conditions, so they are grown in almost all regions of the country from the middle zone and the North-West to the Urals, Siberia and the Far East. Globo's bow is unpretentious in care. He is not afraid of short-term frosts, although when the temperature drops to -5 degrees, seeds and seedlings die.

Advantages and disadvantages

Globo onions are primarily valued for their good harvest, large roots and excellent taste. Culture has other benefits as well.

Globo bulbs have an attractive presentation

Pros:

  • mild taste;
  • high productivity;
  • large bulbs (can be considered as a minus);
  • resistance to many diseases, pests;
  • good keeping quality and transportability;
  • standard care requirements;
  • can be grown in most regions.

Minuses:

  • unstable to return frost;
  • late ripening - harvest in September;
  • may suffer from downy mildew, insects.

When to plant Globo onions

Globo onion belongs to the late varieties, so they try to plant it early. The culture will not withstand return frosts below zero, so the period must be selected carefully, taking into account the growing method and climatic conditions of the region:

  1. If used for seedlings, then the seeds are planted in March.
  2. Seedlings are transferred to open ground in early May.
  3. Also, the seeds can be sown immediately on the garden bed. The optimal period is from mid-April to early May.
  4. If you planted sevok, planting is planned for the first half or mid-May.

Ways of planting Globo onions

Globo onions are most often grown from seeds. They can be planted for seedlings, which is especially important for regions with short summers (Ural, Siberia, Far East). In the south, seeds can be planted directly in open ground and harvested in September. Another way is to plant a set (preferably at the end of May). This is a universal option that is suitable for all Russian regions.

Sowing Globo onions for seedlings

It will take more effort to grow Globo onion seedlings, but a high yield is guaranteed, and the likelihood that the plants will suffer from frost is practically excluded. Before planting, the seeds need to be prepared:

  • hold for 30 minutes in a 1% solution of potassium permanganate;
  • put in warm water for several hours.
  • let dry;
  • soak in a growth stimulant, for example, in "Epin";
  • put on damp gauze and let stand for a week (preferably in a saucer).

The seeds are planted in boxes 10–12 cm high. The soil must be fertile, for example, garden soil with humus, black peat and sand (2: 1: 1: 1). Before planting, several grooves are formed with a depth of 1 cm at a distance of 5 cm. The seeds are planted at intervals of 3 cm, sprinkled with soil a little and sprayed with water from a spray bottle.

Globo onion seedlings are conveniently grown in cassettes

Cover the container with foil and put it in a warm place (23-25 degrees). After emergence, the shelter is removed and grown at 16-18 degrees. In two weeks, they begin to harden the seedlings - they are taken out to the balcony for several hours, gradually increasing the time. They are planted in the ground according to the following scheme:

  • depth - 2 cm;
  • distance between seedlings - 10 cm;
  • the distance between the rows is 50 cm.
Attention! If the weather is normal, Globo onion seedlings can be transplanted into the ground after the appearance of three full-fledged leaves. If frost is expected, wait a few more days.

Growing Globo onions from seeds in the open field

Seeds in open ground are sown in the same way. Previously, the bed is cleaned, dug up, fertilized. The soil should be light and fertile, such as loam or sandy loam. If the soil is depleted, it is pre-fertilized with organic matter (compost, humus) at the rate of one bucket per 2 m2... At the first stage, make sure that the soil is moist. Until shoots appear, it is recommended to cover with foil overnight and on cold days.

Planting sevka in spring

For planting Globo onion sets, open areas are chosen without flooding and stagnant moisture (lowlands are excluded). Planting material is prepared in two weeks. It is heated at 45 degrees for eight hours, then etched in a fungicide solution for 30–40 minutes and left to dry at room temperature.

The landing pattern is as follows:

  • furrows 2 cm deep;
  • the interval between sets is 8–10 cm;
  • the distance between the rows is 30–40 cm.
Advice! If possible, it is better to mulch the planting with sawdust, straw, needles. The protective layer allows the soil to retain moisture longer, and also inhibits the growth of weeds.

Globo onion care

Globo onions are undemanding to care for, but to get a good harvest, you should pay attention to it. It is especially important to perform the following actions:

  1. Watering - at the first stages, abundant, then as the soil dries out. In the heat (in the evening), the greens need additional irrigation.
  2. Fertilizers should be applied only during the period of active feather growth. Organics are best suited - mullein, cut grass infusion. Further feeding is not necessary.
  3. Loosening and weeding as needed.
Attention! The more feathers there are, the larger the bulbs will be. Therefore, you cannot cut them off. If Globo onions are grown for greens, then the turnips will be smaller, and the yield will decrease.

In order to prevent the greenery from wilting, it must be irrigated in a drought.

Disease and pest control

Globo onions rarely suffer from diseases or pests. If brown spots or purple bloom appear on the leaves, and the feathers become lethargic, it is necessary to treat with fungicides as soon as possible:

  • Bordeaux liquid;
  • "HOM";
  • "Maksim";
  • "Ordan";
  • Fitosporin.

In case of an invasion of onion flies, moths, thrips and other pests of onion planting, Globo is sprayed with household solutions (for example, tobacco dust, wood ash, laundry soap, baking soda, chili peppers). In extreme cases, insecticides are used:

  • Aktara;
  • "Decis";
  • "Confidor";
  • Inta-Vir;
  • "Match".
Attention! From the moment of processing to the harvest of Globo onions, at least 5-7 days must pass. Chemicals can build up in greenery, so it's best to wait extra time.

Conclusion

Onion Globo, despite its foreign origin, is well adapted to Russian climatic conditions. The culture is grown in seedlings. In the south, seeds can be planted directly in open ground. Agrotechnology is simple, so even a novice summer resident can cope with cultivation.

Reviews of gardeners about onion Globo

Belova Tatiana, 39 years old, Ulyanovsk
I first learned about the Globo onion from my neighbors. It attracted attention that their bulbs are always large, one to one - such is the feature. Grown with sevkom, although it is better with seedlings. Do not rush to transplant the garden - you need to wait for the heat, it is better to do this in the second half of May. In general, I am satisfied, the harvest is high from year to year.
Minchenko Natalia, 49 years old, Bryansk
Globo onion is almost like a globe, because the bulbs are large and round. I liked the taste very much, there is no bitterness in them, but the pungency is delicate. So it goes great in salads. You need to keep it cool, it lays for four months without loss. It's definitely worth a try, because his care, like our varieties, is nothing unusual.
